Girlfriends Episode 3 Review
I didn't write a review for the first episode of Girlfriends as I thought it was a bit slow and lack-lustre and thought similarly the same about the second. So when it came to the third instalment I was very much hoping that they would have ramped things up a bit - and boy did they! It felt like it was on much longer than an hour as they had crammed so much in. As chaotic as it was at times it was certainly needed following on from the first two episodes.
At the start of the episode we found all three women at the police station after Linda was arrested for Mickey's death. With evidence mounting up against her it wasn't looking good for Linda even though we knew of her innocence, the police were less inclined to believe it after her husband had taken out extra life insurance and Mickey's supposed mistress Carole, (who turns out wasn't his mistress at all) claimed she'd heard him call out Linda's name before he went overboard.
Whilst Linda was having a tough time at the police station, Gail was also having a tough time having to juggle everything on her own. After her son's ex turned up stating to have a court order saying she was allowed access to her son Ben, Gail had no choice but to let him go with the supposed unfit mother. On top of that, Gail was informed that her mum, seeming to be in the early stages of dementia, would be safer living in a care home with round the clock care. This didn't go down well with Gail's mum Edna however, with her declaring that the care home they visited "stunk of piss!". Edna then decided that she'd be better off living with Gail so she could help her out after she broke down to her mum, in a lovely scene between the pair, telling her how much she'd been struggling with everything.
Sue on the other hand had a bit of quieter time of it in this episode after the first two episodes very much centring around her. Whilst busy supporting her friend for the majority of the episode, Sue did find time to give a letter to her ex-John, that her son Andrew gave had written up, threatening him with legal action for sacking her after insisting she was too old to do her job.
Tom made a surprise re-appearance after being let out of prison for a second time, and it led to one of my favourite moments from the episode when Kay Mellor managed to slip in a cheeky wink to Harry Potter which no doubt only hardcore fans will have picked up on when she had Tom exclaim "Yeah, you and whose army?!" one of Neville Longbottoms most iconic lines from the franchise. I may be wrong but I personally think it would have been far too big a coincidence for it to have been unintentional.
Luckily for Linda her friends came to her rescue just as she was being charged with murder. After finding out that Carole was a crazy stalker and had in fact been stalking Mickey. It meant that Carole's evidence was no longer reliable so Linda was let go.
And what a cliff hanger! I'm not a cat fan but - that poor cat!
Let's hope someone can come to Linda's rescue in time before deranged Carole hurts her too!
