Top 10 Soap Super Couples

Now these aren't necessarily iconic couples like Jack and Vera from Corrie etc. but just couples that I have been a huge fan of at one point or another over the years and who seem to have gone down well with audiences overall. I haven't put them in order of favourite to least favourite as that would be too hard so they are just in a random order.

1. John Paul and Craig (McDean) - I know I said these weren't in any particular order but I think I am starting with my all-time favourite couple. A couple from Hollyoaks, John Paul and Craig were best mates at school when John Paul soon realised he was starting to feel more than just friendship towards Craig. John Paul eventually confessed to Craig about his feelings, leading Craig down a very confusing path of having to work out how he also really felt towards his best mate. Craig at the time having a girlfriend meant him and John Paul would go on to have an affair which would go on to be one of Hollyoaks most memorable storylines and couples. At the time this storyline was ground breaking to a point as very few soaps had focused on love triangles which involved a man sleeping with another man, both of which were main characters. I do feel this storyline paved the way for many other soaps to follow suit with seeing how well this storyline went down with audiences and realising that soap viewers were in fact ready for more LGBT based stories, and that they wouldn't be completely horrified by the thought of two people of the same sex being in love. John Paul and Craig spent a year apart after their affair was revealed but were later reunited for a happy ending.

2. Karl and Susan - Very much an iconic couple who have been together for years but have had more than their fair share of ups and down is Karl and Susan Kennedy from Neighbours. One of the most well-known couples in soap is still going strong despite Karl's infidelity issues with Sarah (naughty Karl!) which in turn lead to one of the most memorable slaps in soapland when Susan found out about what Karl had been up to. Despite having being apart a few times, and even marrying other people, Karl and Susan were always destined to be together and after everything they have been through has only gone on to make them stronger. Currently enjoying a very comedic storyline on the show, which the actors excel at, the couple continue to be the back bone of the show and long may it continue.

3. Ste and Brendan (Stendan) - Another Hollyoaks couple who at times (or maybe the whole time!) were deemed quite controversial. Brendan being a very complicated soul due to issues in his childhood and his self -hatred about being gay lead him to be very violent at times which he would often take out on Ste. Ste later realised he deserved better and ended things with Brendan for good which in turn made Brendan sort himself out as he realised how much he loved Ste and needed to be a better person if he was going to be with him. In the end before Brendan went to prison, which lead to the character's exit, fans were treated to a glimpse of the couple being together and happy. However controversial this pairing was, the amazing chemistry that sizzled between actors Kieron and Emmett was undeniable and I'm sure is one of the main reasons which lead viewers to constantly keep rooting for them despite all of the issues between the pair.

4. Kat and Alfie - I was very much a fan of this couple when they first got together. I can remember how well the show built up this pairing by having them both desperately wanting to be together without the other's knowledge and having the classic soap obstacles preventing that from happening. In the end though after Alfie stops Kat from marrying Andy, in a scene very much copied from the film 'The Graduate', they were finally together much to my delight. In the end I do think the show messed with them too much by having them split up so many times but it was nice to see them leave the square in 2015 happy and still very much together. (And yes, I'm going to just ignore the whole Redwater thing!)

5. Jacqui and Rhys - The time when this couple got together was a golden age of Hollyoaks when there was a string of supercouples (all 3 of which are on this list) being put together on the show in 2010/11. This relationship started off in a very comical way with the pair starting out pretty much hating each other but hate soon turned to love. Not having the easiest time together with lots of cheating involved (on Rhys' part), the pair went on to have some very tough storylines one of which consisted of Jacqui being raped by Rhys' best friend. With Rhys supporting her they went on to marry until Rhys had an affair and was then killed in a tragic accident. Poor Jacqui only found out about his infidelity after he died. Jacqui eventually left the village on her own and headed to Alicante.

6. Toadie and Sonya - Another couple from Neighbours who aren't currently together but were together for a whopping for 9 years which is a very long time in soap terms. They pair aren't currently together as Toadie slept with Andrea (he believed it to be his ex-wife Dee who he thought had died on their wedding day!) Both however took responsibility for the breakdown of their marriage with Toadie's infidelity and Sonya pushing to be a surrogate for another Ramsay Street resident. The couple are slowly working on their marriage with couples counselling but I'm sure there are still more obstacles ahead for this pair before we see them back to being the happy couple they always have been. I'm impressed that the show held off for so long with a cheating storylines for this couple. But I like how they waited for the right time and gave them many problems so it was believable and understandable and you ended up as a viewer feeling sorry for both parties rather than just blaming and hating one of the characters. I look forward to the day when they do get back together but I'm sure more drama is in store before we see that happen.

7. Darren and Nancy - I'm no longer watching Hollyoaks but I'm pretty sure these two are still together, however they have split up a couple of times through the years. I added this couple as when they first got together they were one of the three supercouples on the show at the current time along with Ste and Brendan and Jacqui and Rhys who obviously also appear on this list. Another couple that have been through a lot together but before I stopped watching the show I was able to see them get married and have a child together which was really lovely. I really hope Hollyoaks keeps them together on for a long time to come as they are a huge asset to the show, not only as a couple but also individually.

8. Robert and Aaron (Robron) - Another couple which have had plenty of ups and downs with one of them being shot, one being tied to a radiator (don't ask!) and both being in a car accident that ended in them nearly drowning. The pair first got together after Robert returned after being away for many years and was instantly taken by feisty Aaron. Robert however was engaged to be married but this didn't stop him from entering in to an affair with Aaron which would later be exposed by none other than Aaron himself after he'd had enough of Robert's lying and scheming ways. Robert was later shot which made him change his ways and proved as such to Aaron who later gave him another chance. Sadly a year later and things have ended once again between the pair after Robert cheated on Aaron. I'm not currently watching the show right now as their bad storyline choices have lead me to walk away which is a real shame. But that has never taken away from the amazing acting by Danny Miller (Aaron) and Ryan Hawley (Robert) but my patience can only go so far, and unfortunately on this occasion, it ran out. I just hope they find their way back to each other so they and the fans can move on from this awful storyline.

9. Ben and Lisa - Blast from the past with this one but I think this pairing was one of the first couples I really rooted for and desperately wanted to be together. They had many ups and downs throughout their time on the show with Lisa having a traumatic time with her self-harming and Ben being involved with many different love interests but they eventually got together and left in 2005. The pair then went on to have their own spin-off show where they both cheated on each other and Lisa ended up accidentally shooting Ben (as you do!) The show ended without knowing whether Ben lived to see another day or not. I think this is another time where we can just choose to ignore the spin-off and focus on the fact that the left the main show together and happy.

10. Sonia and Martin - Going back to the square and Sonia and Martin. After having a child together when they were only teens, with Sonia famously giving birth without realising she was even pregnant, they decided to give their daughter up for adoption. A few years later when the pair were a bit older they decided to get back together and try to get their daughter back which thankfully they managed to do. All was well between the pair until the show decided to ruin the couple by having Martin accuse Sonia of killing his mum Pauline but he later realised he was in the wrong and that Sonia was in fact innocent. Despite all of this happening it didn't stop the show from putting them back together and having them leave the square with the daughter they both shared. The couple were together for many years until the show decided to bring back both characters but by the point they had unfortunately parted ways but still remained good friends for the sake of their daughter.
